Our delayed arrival in Marathon meant we could skip going to the Crane Point Hammock Museum and Nature Trails to stay on schedule, or we could do it and sort things out later. We opted to do it, and what a treat it was!
We arrived at 9 AM just as the place was opening. It was a mild-temperatured morning with a slight breeze, perfect for exploring the area. There was an introductory film that explained the history and significance of the 63-acre land and its preservation.
We stayed on the easier trail that was a half-mile walk to Crane Point for beautiful views of the Gulf, access to kayaking, and outside tour of the Cranes' house, and the opportunity to feed fish. But the best part was sitting at the edge of the tidal pool and having a "fish pedicure!"
On the way back to the entrance, we went by a tabby house that was built in 1904. There was a butterfly garden. And a turtle named Rocco that we watched eat kale and romaine lettuce (just like the manatees like!).
If you are ever in Marathon, we recommend taking timeto visit.
