Along the way, we wanted to visit the Bill Baggs Cape Florida state park and check out the Lighthouse and beaches there. What should have been an hour's drive was nearly doubled due to a triathlon shutting down the causeway to Key Biscayne to a single lane. And once you're in the queue for crossing the causeway, there's no turning back.
It was a good opportunity to enjoy the scenery!
Once we got to the state park ($8), we drove to the end where there is a nice area set up for learning about the Lighthouse and its keepers.
You can climb the 109 steps to the top, but there was a line and we were already an hour later than we anticipated, so we just took a few pictures inside. We did take time to tour the Lighthouse keeper's house.
The water was beautiful. The state park has a concessioneer that rents chairs and umbrellas for beach use.
By the time we left, the traffic was flowing much better. We crossed the causeway and took in the Miami skyline before continuing south. Next stop, a well-known fruit stand.
