We planned to go to Le Claire, Iowa, for two nights on May 20th and 21st. But there was severe weather predicted for the area for the two days we were going to be there. So this was a time we needed to rethink our plans and make some adjustments to our itinerary.
We were scheduled to go to Hannibal, Missouri, after our two nights in Iowa and stay there for two nights. The weather was predicted to be better that further south, so we changed our hotel reservation in Hannibal to arrive two days earlier and stay until our already planned departure.
We still wanted to go through Le Claire to be able to see the Buffalo Bill Museum and Antique Archaeology, so we checked the weather and routes to see if we could be there ahead of the weather. We were planning to go over to Dubuque and drop down to Le Claire, but it looked like the storm was going to be in Dubuque when we would be driving through. So we found a route that took us through Illinois and then over to Iowa.
On the way to Le Claire, we saw a sign that we were nearing Dixon, the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan. Because we hadn't planned to go that way originally, we didn't know anything about it, so we pulled off the interstate to see how far it was to the house. It was only a few minutes away, so we decided to check it out.
The Boyhood Home of Ronald Reagan has a visitor center next to the property, but it wasn't open on the day we were there. But we were able to walk around the property and read the information signs posted around.
While we wished we could have toured the home, we felt like we got a sense of where President Reagan grew up. So this was an addition to our Presidential trail and our Childhood Home trail for our trip.
Have you been to any Presidential Boyhood homes?
