Iowa is one of the states that neither of us had been to before, so we were so excited to check off Iowa on our way to Omaha, Nebraska. We were just passing through on this day (May 8th), but had plans to stop in Sioux City and Le Mars the next day, and then spend two nights in Le Claire about two weeks later. (Spoiler alert: we had to change our plans about staying over in Iowa due to the severe weather that was passing through when it was time to return May 20th.)
We were hoping to find a Welcome Center for Iowa once we crossed the state line, but we've found that states in the middle of America don't have Welcome Centers like we do in Florida. They do have smaller regional Welcome Centers stationed at various exits, so we learned to not count on a Welcome Center just across the state line. For Iowa on this day, we stopped at the Southern Loess Hills Welcome Center in Percival, Iowa. The elderly woman who was working at the Welcome Center was, well, quite welcoming! She apologized for there not being much to see there but they had only recently reopened after being damaged when the Missouri River overflowed a few years ago. I hadn't thought about it until then, but Iowa is bound on the west by the Missouri River and on the east by the Mississippi River. Also they had Iowa postcards so I bought a few.We stopped at a rest area in Iowa and it had Tribal Artwork incorporated into the design of the building. Like these:
Here are a few pictures we took as we were driving in Iowa.
We'll post more about our time in Iowa in later blog posts..~ Cindy D - with just two states now that I haven't been to (Delaware and Vermont).
