When we started this trip, I still had four states I haven't been to. Delaware, Vermont, Iowa, and Kansas. DH also hadn't been to Kansas. But on Thursday, May 2, 2024, that changed! We crossed into Kansas! And because we were on a US highway, there was a place to stop and take a picture!
We spent the four nights in Kansas, starting off in Dodge City for two nights, and another two nights in northeastern Kansas just outside Baileyville. I'll make separate blog posts for some of the attractions we did, so check back for those later.
The western side of Kansas looked a lot like Oklahoma with its wide-open fields and its wind farms. We have solar farms in Florida, but thought wind farms make a lot of sense in Kansas because you can harness the wind but also plant crops around them, while solar farms take up a lot of land surface. We liked seeing alternative energy sources being put into use and practice.
We stayed in a hotel in Dodge City, but in Baileyville, we were in a really cool Air BnB that was on someone's farm property. They actually have two places (here's the other one) and it started out by needing extra room when all their kids and grandkids were there at once! So they built the little one first and decided to see how it would do as an Air BnB; it was in such demand that they decided to build another place to use which is the one we stayed in. It's called Zome on the Range - the Kansas state song is Home on the Range - and it's a dome-style geometric house. Here are some pictures inside and out.
The fields next to the Zome were teeming with rye grass that the farmer across the street would soon be cutting and rolling to feed his 500 head of cattle. We occasionally got a whiff of the "farm air" but as it was pretty chilly the weekend we were there, we spent most of our time cozied up inside.
And here's the first #flowersmakemehappy in Kansas picture. I think it's a wild geranium.
