Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum

Along the shoreline of the Straits of Mackinac in Mackinaw City you can find the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum.

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse was in service in the early 1900s.  The museum demonstrated the life of the lighthouse keeper in 1910.

Here are some pictures of the exterior part of the lighthouse.

Here is some more information about the lighthouse.

We had the opportunity to climb the lighthouse.  Look at this spiral staircase.

We had a guided tour of the lighthouse tower by this costumed historical interpreter.

This is the view from the top of the lighthouse.  As you can see, the midges were still pretty thick.

This Fresnel Lens is on display in the lighthouse museum.

Here's a video of the Fresnel Lens in action.

If you want to watch a virtual tour of the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, you might find this one of interest.

We also went to the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum.  You wouldn't necessarily think about how many ships have been damaged or destroyed in the Great Lakes but this museum explains how that has happened over the years.

We enjoyed our tour of the Lighthouse and the Shipwreck Museum.
