I had previously written that we would be traveling along the Talimena Scenic Byway through the Ouachita Mountains at some point during our Middle States trip. This was the day!
We left the Big Cedar Cabins and Campgrounds by 8 AM. I like waking up in a place like that when the only sounds you really hear are nature waking up - and any people noises are quiet ones. We were as quiet as we could be packing up and heading out.
It was only a few miles from the campgrounds to where we could join the Talimena Scenic Byway. When we turned onto the road, it was obvious why it's called a scenic byway. There was no traffic - we may have seen two cars the whole 19 miles - and we didn't encounter any other people - but the vista views were beautiful. It was also really windy at some of the stops and we had to pull on our jackets.
There's a visitor center somewhere in Talihina, but I had failed to put the address in my travel notes for the day, and while we followed the signs, we still missed it. When I was making my end of day notes, I saw where I had included it as a stop (complete with address so we could find it). Google Maps on the fly didn't work for it in the moment. Lesson learned? Really read over your planning notes the night before so you don't miss out on something you wanted to do.
And just because I like this butterfly:
