The Dodge City Carnegie Arts Center / formerly known as Carnegie Library

When exploring possibilities of sites to include on our itinerary, I looked for locations with Carnegie Libraries that were still in existence.  While the building in Dodge City is still standing, it is currently being used as their Arts Center.  But it is open to tours during their business hours, so we took the time to take a look.

The building is absolutely beautiful from the outside.  It was expanded at one point, which we learned about from the volunteer working at the Arts Center.  It turned out that she had worked at the library there as a teenager in the 1960s.  So she was able to tell us about the building in its heyday.

Many of the stained glass windows are original as are some of the furnishings tucked away on the second floor.

The Carnegie Library building makes a beautiful venue for Dodge City's Arts Council.  I'm glad we took the half hour to stop in and see it.  The highlight for us was talking with the volunteer who had firsthand experience with it.
