Michigan is one of the states that DH had not been to, so he was excited about checking off another state on his list. It's the last new state for either of us on this trip.
We arrived in Michigan on a Sunday afternoon and spent most of the week split between the upper peninsula and the eastern coast of Lake Michigan.
Here is one of our first views of Lake Michigan. Or technically, water associated with Lake Michigan.
Our first night we stayed in Escanaba, Michigan. We had booked an Air BnB at the Delta but were notified several weeks before that the owners had sold the building. So we booked the Comfort Suites which is by the medical center. I'm glad we did because the front desk clerk was so nice and helpful to us throughout our stay.
One of the things she was helpful with was recommending somewhere to eat dinner. While not strict guidelines, we generally like to eat at places we can't eat at home, are local vs chain, and have something that is safe for me to eat as someone with celiac disease. Also not fancy or too expensive! She gave me a couple of recommendations, but the one that stood out from her description was Drifters. It's a local business that when the owner was ready to sell, they sold it to the employees, so now it is employee owned and operated. It was Mother's Day so we thought it might be busy; it was, but not because it was Mother's Day but because it was always like that - a place that local families go to eat! We had a delicious meal there and great service.
After dinner we drove to the Escanaba lakefront to see the Sand Point LIghthouse. When we got out of the car, there was a swarm of bugs, so we moved the car to get away from them. Well, that didn't work because there was another swarm of them. They didn't seem to bite or land on us, but they were so thick and getting on everything else, especially anything white like the car and the fencing and buildings at Sand Point Lighthouse. They were miserable little things.
I hurried to take pictures and we didn't talk while we were out of the car for fear of swallowing a mouthful of bugs. When we got back to the hotel, we thanked the front desk clerk for her dinner recommendation, and then asked her what's the deal with the bugs?
The swarm of bugs are called midges and are found near bodies of water for a period of a few weeks. They don't bite or sting, and they are a great source of food for the whitefish that live in Lake Michigan. But they sure are annoying! Where we live, we deal with gnats in late summer, and yellow flies this time of year, and love bugs around Memorial Day and Labor Day. So I guess every region has their own annoyance when it comes to bugs. And because it was just at the beginning of "midge season" we dealt with them for the whole week in Michigan.
We did see a rainbow through the cloud of midges! So I guess that was a good thing.
